The best portable sewing machine for most people is the Brother XM2701: 12.6 pounds, 27 stitches, a free arm and a drop-in bobbin, and Amazon's #2 sewing machine. If every pound counts, the Brother GX37 is 10.1 pounds. If you're carrying a machine to quilt retreats, buy the Janome 3160QDC-G for its thread cutter and dual voltage. Skip the handhelds.

How we picked these machines
We searched Amazon for portable, lightweight and small sewing machines on October 13, 2026 and kept full-size machines under about 13 pounds with strong sales and thousands of ratings, plus one mini. Weights come from the listings and from Janome's spec pages. The XM2701 showed 4,000+ purchases in the past month and the CS5055 2,000+.
This is a spec review. We compared listings and spec sheets and read owner feedback; we didn't carry or sew on every machine. How we research.
Weight vs what you get
"Portable" covers three kinds of machine. Compact full-size machines (10 to 13 pounds) sew anything a beginner or quilter needs and still ride in a tote. Minis (2 to 6 pounds) run on batteries or a small adapter and do one or a few light stitches. Handhelds clip onto fabric for emergency mending. Most people searching for a portable machine want the first kind.
| Where it's going | What matters most | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| Closet shelf, out on the kitchen table to sew | Full features, easy setup | Brother XM2701 |
| Weekly class, carried on foot or by bus | Lowest weight that still does buttonholes | Brother GX37 |
| Quilt retreat, long piecing days | Thread cutter, start/stop, hard cover | Janome 3160QDC-G |
| Living or traveling outside the US | Dual voltage | Janome 3160QDC-G |
| A child's first machine | Simple controls, little to adjust | SINGER M1500 |
| Dorm room or RV, light mending only | Smallest size, battery option | Magicfly mini |
What a lighter machine gives up
Weight is partly frame. A heavier machine sits still when it runs fast or pushes through layers; a 10-pound machine can creep across a slick table on a long seam. Put a rubber mat or a drawer liner under it and slow down on thick spots. Light machines also tend to have shorter throats, so a lap quilt is about the practical limit for quilting the layers together, even if you can piece a bed-size top block by block. And the lightest minis drop the zigzag entirely, which means no finished seams, no buttonholes and no stretch stitches for knits.
None of that matters if you're hemming curtains and sewing tote bags. It matters a lot if you plan to sew jeans or quilt big. For those jobs, look at our heavy-duty and quilting picks, and accept the extra pounds.

Why we left out handheld machines
Handheld "mending machines" sell well, but the reviews tell the story. The Singer Stitch Sew Quick describes itself as a single-thread machine for "quick repairs or temporary basting" that "works best on lightweight fabrics." It averages 3.3 stars from more than 11,600 ratings. A single-thread chain stitch pulls out if one end comes loose, so a handheld hem won't survive the wash. For hems, see our sewing machine for hemming pants guide.
Also worth a look
The Brother XM3700 is a 12.5-pound, 37-stitch machine that comes with an accessory pouch, a handy touch for carrying feet and needles. The Janome Arctic Crystal (13 lb per Janome) is a simple, dial-controlled Janome with a free arm. Our best Janome sewing machine guide covers it in more detail. We looked for the Janome Travel Mate 30 too, but couldn't find it on Amazon.
Carrying it safely
- Use a padded tote or a hard cover; the 3160QDC-G includes one. Remove the needle and lower the presser foot so nothing snags. If it's going to class, check our sewing machine case fit chart before you buy a bag.
- Pack the pedal, cord, bobbins and a spare needle pack in the same bag. Forgetting the pedal is the classic retreat mistake.
- At a retreat or class, an extension table makes a compact machine far easier to piece on; our sewing table guide covers clip-on tables.
