For most people the SINGER Universal Hard Carrying Case is the safe buy: its inside measures 18 x 9 x 12.5 inches, which clears every machine we checked, including the taller Brother SE700. If you'd rather have a padded bag with pockets, the SINGER canvas tote is roomy enough for the same machines and for most sergers. The popular soft bags that list exactly 12 inches of height work for compact machines like the Brother XM2701, with no room to spare at the top.

How we checked fit
Nobody on page one of a "sewing machine case" search compares a case with a machine, so we did it on paper. We took Amazon's listed dimensions for four of the best-selling home machines, then compared them with the sizes printed on the five most popular cases that state their dimensions. Sales and ratings come from Amazon on October 15, 2026. Cases that didn't state a size on two tries were left out; a case you can't size isn't one we can recommend.
This is a spec review. We compared published dimensions; we didn't pack each machine into each case. How we research.
| Machine | Width x depth x height (Amazon listing) | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Brother XM2701 | 15.3 x 5.86 x 12.01 in | 12.6 lb |
| Singer Heavy Duty 4423 | 15 x 6.25 x 12 in | 17.1 lb |
| Brother CS7000X | 16.26 to 17 x 6.65 to 7 x 12 to 12.21 in (two Brother listings differ) | 14 lb |
| Brother SE700 (embroidery unit off) | 16.5 x 7.76 x 12.09 in | 15.6 lb |
Measure your machine first
Height is the number that catches people out. All four machines above are about 12 inches tall, and several of the best-selling soft bags list exactly 12 inches. Padded sides also eat into the space, so a bag's outside size isn't its inside size. One rolling case we looked at, the LUXJA bag with a detachable dolly, lists an inner height of 11 inches, too short for any of the four.
Which case fits which machine
| Case (stated size) | XM2701 | Singer 4423 | CS7000X | SE700 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SINGER hard case (inside 18 x 9 x 12.5) | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| SINGER canvas tote (18 x 10 x 13) | Fits | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| HOMEST carry case (about 17 x 8 x 12) | Snug in height | Snug in height | Too tight | Too tight |
| Anitor case (inside 15.8 x 8.5 x 12) | Snug in height | Snug in height | Too narrow | Too narrow |
| CURMIO rolling embroidery case | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Named by the maker |
"Snug" means the stated size matches the machine's height within a hundredth of an inch. A soft bag usually zips over that, but with no room for the pedal on top. "Too tight" means the machine is wider or taller than the stated size.
The 5 best sewing machine cases
SINGER Universal Hard Carrying Case
This is the one case on the list that clears every machine we checked, with room to spare: 18 inches wide inside, 9 deep and 12.5 tall. The machine sits on a non-slip tray, the lid drops over it, and lock clasps hold it shut. With 6,602 ratings on the white version (a black one is sold too), it's also the most-reviewed case we found.
A hard shell is the right call if the machine rides in a trunk with other things on top of it or sits in a closet under a stack of bins. The trade-off is pockets: there aren't any, so the pedal and accessories need their own bag.
- Inside18 x 9 x 12.5 in
- Outside20.5 x 11.8 x 14.8 in
- Typehard shell
- Basenon-slip inner tray
- Closurelock clasps
- Handlebuilt into the lid
Why it stands out
- Fits the XM2701, 4423, CS7000X and SE700 by the numbers
- Hard shell for trunks and stacked storage
- Non-slip tray and lock clasps
Think twice if
- You want pockets for the pedal and notions
- You carry it far: a hard case with a lid handle gets heavy fast
SINGER Machine Carrying Tote Bag for Sewing Machines and Sergers
The roomiest soft bag we found with a stated size: 18 x 10 x 13 inches, a good inch taller than the bags people usually buy. That extra inch is what lets a 12-inch machine go in without a fight. Singer sells it for sergers too, and a serger's wide, squat shape fits the 10-inch depth well. The canvas is plain, and the padded handles meet in the middle.
- Size18 x 10 x 13 in
- Materialcanvas
- Closurefull zipper
- Handlespadded, join together
- Fitsmost Singer sewing machines and sergers
Why it stands out
- 13 inches tall: clears every machine we checked
- Also sized for sergers

Think twice if

- You need hard protection
HOMEST Sewing Machine Carry Case with Shoulder Strap and Front Pocket
This is the bag most people buy: #3 in Amazon's sewing machine carrying case category, 6,410 ratings, and two listings of the same bag selling 200 to 400 a month each. What you're paying for is organization. Clear pockets, spool holders and a rear sleeve that slides over a suitcase handle make it a good class bag.
Fit is the catch. HOMEST gives the size as about 17 x 8 x 12 inches and tells you to check your machine first. A compact 15-inch machine like the XM2701 or Singer 4423 goes in, snug at the top. A 17-inch CS7000X or the SE700 is too tall or wide for it.
- Sizeabout 17 x 8 x 12 in
- Materialheavy-duty nylon
- Paddingthick, soft lining
- Storageclear organizer pockets, spool holders
- Carryhandles, shoulder strap, luggage sleeve
Why it stands out
- Clear pockets and spool holders
- Luggage sleeve for travel
- Most ratings of any soft case
Think twice if
- Your machine is wider than about 16 inches or taller than 12
Anitor Sewing Machine Carrying Case with Removable Bottom Padding
Anitor is one of the few bag makers that prints both inside and outside dimensions, which is exactly what you need. Inside it's 15.8 x 8.5 x 12 inches. Hard boards in the front and back panels plus a removable bottom pad give it more structure than a typical tote, and it tied for the best-selling case in our search, at 400 a month.
It's a compact-machine bag. A 15.3-inch XM2701 or a 15-inch Singer 4423 fits with half an inch to spare in width. Anything wider than 15.8 inches, which includes the CS7000X and SE700, won't.
- Inside15.8 x 8.5 x 12 in
- Outside16.5 x 11 x 12.5 in
- Protectionremovable bottom pad, hard boards front and back
- Carryhandles, padded strap, luggage strap
Why it stands out
- Inside and outside sizes both published
- Hard front and back boards
- Removable bottom pad for heavy machines
Think twice if
- Your machine is wider than 15.8 inches

CURMIO Rolling Embroidery Machine Case
Embroidery machines are awkward to pack because of the embroidery unit and hoops, and this is the only case we found that names Brother's current SE and PE machines. Two pairs of adjustable straps hold the machine still. There's a separate inner layer for hoops and projects in progress, and a removable bottom board under foam padding. The dolly comes off when you don't need it.
With 144 ratings, it has a much smaller track record than the others here. For an SE700 or PE900 going to a class every week, it's still the most specific fit on the market.
- Fits (per maker)Brother SE600, PE535, SE700, SE2000, PE900, PE800, PE545
- Securing2 pairs of adjustable straps

- You want a long ratings history
Hard, soft or rolling?
| If you | Get | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Store the machine in a closet or trunk with things on top | Hard case | Padding doesn't stop a crushing load |
| Carry it to a weekly class | Padded soft bag | Lighter, with pockets for the pedal and notions |
| Walk it more than a parking lot's length, or have a sore back | Rolling case | Machines in our table weigh 12.6 to 17.1 lb before accessories |
| Own an embroidery combo | A case that names your model | The unit and hoops need their own space |
| Only want to keep dust off at home | A cover | See below |
Packing tips that prevent damage
- Take the needle out, or lower it into a scrap of folded fabric, so it can't bend in transit.
- Put the pedal and cord in a pocket, not on top of the machine where they press on the needle area.
- Remove the extension table and, on a combo machine, the embroidery unit. Both are easy to crack.
- Lift the case by its handles, never by the machine inside.
- Flying? Carry-on rules vary by airline, so check size and weight limits before you book.
Sewing machine covers
A cover keeps dust off a machine that lives on the table. It isn't a carrying case. Check the box first: Brother lists a protective cover among the CS7000X's included accessories, and many machines ship with one. If yours didn't, two quilted covers with stated sizes:
- The Addicted DEPO quilted dust cover measures 8 x 17.5 x 12 inches, with two clear front pockets and one large pocket for patterns. It has 1,868 ratings. The listing says it isn't water resistant.
- The AMOIGEE quilted cover fits machines up to 17 x 7 x 12 inches, so it's sized for the XM2701, 4423 and CS7000X but not the deeper SE700.
Which one to buy
If your machine is wider than 16 inches or taller than 12, skip the bestselling soft bags and buy the SINGER hard case or the SINGER tote. If it's a compact model like the XM2701, the Anitor gives you the most structure and the HOMEST the most pockets. SE and PE embroidery owners who travel should look at the CURMIO first.
Still choosing the machine? Our best portable sewing machine guide covers the lightest options, and the Brother XM2701 review covers the most popular compact one. For the class bag itself, add the small things from our sewing machine accessories list, and when the machine stays home, a sturdy sewing table beats a wobbly one.
Case and machine dimensions come from each product's Amazon listing, read October 15, 2026; listings that don't say whether a size is inside or outside are treated as the usable size. Prices change often, so the buttons show the current price on Amazon. How we research · Affiliate disclosure
