The best sewing machine accessories, in the order you'll need them

Most of what a new machine needs is small and cheap: needles, bobbins, a seam ripper and a way to hold fabric. Here's what to buy in the first week, what can wait, and what fits your brand.

Spec review · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

Buy spare needles, extra bobbins in your machine's class, a seam ripper and a jar of clips first. That's the whole first-week list, and none of it is expensive. A magnetic seam guide, a cleaning kit and tailor's chalk come next. Presser feet and lights are worth buying when a project asks for them, not before. One thing to skip: the "sewing kit for adults" bundles that top Amazon's charts are hand-sewing kits, and nothing in them fits your machine.

How we picked

We started from Amazon's "bought in the past month" counts on October 15, 2026, for a "sewing machine accessories" search. The numbers say a lot about what owners actually run out of: tailor's chalk at 9,000 a month, seam rippers at 8,000, clips and magnetic seam guides at 6,000 each. We kept products with at least several hundred ratings and read each listing in full for sizes and fit notes. Then we sorted by when a new owner needs each one, which retailer lists don't do because they're built around a catalog.

This is a spec review. Every product claim comes from the listing; we didn't test these items ourselves. How we research.

Fit notes by brand

Two accessories have to match the machine exactly: bobbins and presser feet. The rest (rippers, clips, chalk, brushes) fit everything.

Our bobbin lookup chart lists Brother and Singer models by name. Use plastic bobbins in machines built for plastic; bsewinn's accessory guide warns against metal bobbins in those, and Brother says to use SA156-type bobbins only.

SCHMETZ Universal Sewing Machine Needles, Assorted Sizes (2 cards)

Needles wear out faster than anything else on a machine, and a tired one causes the skipped stitches and snapped thread that new owners blame on the machine. This SCHMETZ pack gives you 20 universal needles in assorted sizes. The slightly rounded point handles both wovens and most knits.

Change the needle every project or two, and match the size to the fabric with our needle sizes chart. Singer owners can buy SINGER's universal assortment instead; Singer's own FAQ recommends its own needles.

  • Count20 (2 cards of 10)
  • Typeuniversal, slightly rounded point
  • Fitshome sewing machines
  • Fabricswovens and knits

Why it stands out

  • Fits every home machine that takes standard needles
  • Two cards, assorted sizes
  • 4.8 stars from 1,266 ratings

Think twice if

  • You sew mostly knits or denim, where ballpoint or jeans needles do better

Best bulk bobbins

Eoehro 50 Pcs Bobbins (SA156 / Class 15) with 2 Storage Boxes

Fifty clear bobbins and two storage boxes, so every color you use can sit wound and ready. The listing gives the height as 0.45 inch, about 11.4 mm, which is in line with Brother's 11.5 mm SA156 spec. With 4,534 ratings, it's the most-reviewed bulk pack in our bobbin searches.

One honest caveat: the listing labels these both SA156 and Class 15. Brother says to use only SA156-type bobbins, and Singer warns that Class 15 and look-alikes can differ. If your manual names a branded bobbin, a branded pack is the safe buy; if it just says SA156 or Class 15 plastic, this works for most.

  • Count50
  • Materialclear plastic
  • Size0.8 in diameter x 0.45 in tall
  • Storage2 boxes included

Why it stands out

  • 50 bobbins with two cases
  • Clear, so you can see what's left
  • Most ratings of any bulk pack we found

Think twice if

  • Your manual names metal or a different class
  • You want branded bobbins to match the manual exactly

Best seam ripper

FIVEIZERO Seam Rippers (2 Large, 2 Small) with Scissors

You will unpick seams. This set is the #1 seller in Amazon's seam ripper category, with 8,000 bought in the past month, and it gives you two sizes: 5.5-inch rippers for denim and heavy seams, 3.5-inch ones for fine fabric and tight spots. Keep one by the machine and one in the project bag. The red ball on the short tine protects the fabric while the blade cuts the thread.

  • Rippers4 (two 5.5 in, two 3.5 in)
  • Extra1 pair stainless scissors
  • Tipred safety ball
  • Rank#1 in Sewing Seam Rippers

Why it stands out

  • Two large and two small rippers
  • Small scissors included
  • Best-selling ripper on Amazon right now

Think twice if

  • You want a lighted or magnified ripper for very dark fabric

Best way to hold layers

Sewing Clips, 100 Pcs in a Jar

Clips hold fabric where pins would leave holes or fall out: binding, vinyl, laminated cotton, thick layers. These open to 11 mm, enough for several layers of quilting cotton or a folded binding. A hundred in a jar covers a whole quilt binding. Pins are still better for curved seams and fitting a garment, so think of clips as the second tool, not a replacement.

  • Count100 in 9 colors
  • Size27 x 10 x 13 mm
  • Opens11 mm
  • MaterialABS with spring steel

Why it stands out

  • No holes in vinyl, oilcloth or leather
  • Opens 11 mm for thick layers
  • 4,420 ratings

Think twice if

  • You sew mostly curves and fitted garments, where pins hold better

Best for straight seams

BREXFIRE Magnetic Seam Guides (3 Pack)

A magnetic seam guide sits on the needle plate and gives the fabric edge something to ride against, so a 5/8-inch or 1/4-inch seam allowance stays the same from top to bottom. It's the cheapest fix for wandering seams, and these sold 6,000 in the past month. The polygonal shape has several edges, which the listing pitches for binding and hems too.

Check one thing first: it only sticks to a metal needle plate. The listing says so outright and suggests a stick-on metal square for machines without one.

  • Count3
  • Shapepolygonal with scale
  • MaterialABS with magnet
  • Needsmetal needle plate

Why it stands out

  • Even seam allowances without a special foot
  • Three guides in the pack
  • Lifts off in a second

Think twice if

  • Your needle plate is plastic

Best cleaning kit

CATOSUM 7-Piece Sewing Machine Cleaning Kit

Lint packs in under the needle plate and around the bobbin, and a clogged feed area causes bunching and skipped stitches. This kit has what the job takes: a needle plate screwdriver, a double-ended brush with two stiffnesses, and curved tweezers for the thread scraps you can't reach with fingers. Brushing out the bobbin area every few projects is the cheapest maintenance there is.

We'd skip canned air, which can push lint further into the machine; brush it and pick it out instead.

  • Includescurved tweezers, double-ended brush, needle plate screwdriver, 4 screwdrivers
  • Materialmetal and plastic

Why it stands out

  • Needle plate screwdriver plus four others
  • Curved tweezers reach under the hook
  • 4.8 stars

Think twice if

  • Your machine came with its own brush and screwdriver and you've kept them

Best marking tool for the money

OZXTYO Tailor's Chalk, 10 Pieces

Chalk is still the most common way to mark darts, pocket placement and hem lines, and this box was the best-selling accessory in our search at 9,000 a month, with 10,953 ratings. Four colors mean you can mark both light and dark fabric. The listing says it comes off by washing, patting or with alcohol. Test on a scrap of silk or anything that water-spots.

  • Count10 in 4 colors (blue, red, white, yellow)
  • HardnessHB
  • Removalwashing, brushing or alcohol

Why it stands out

  • Ten pieces in four colors
  • Shows on light and dark fabric
  • Most-bought accessory in our data

Think twice if

  • You quilt, where heat-erasable pens draw finer lines

Worth buying later

Feet and attachments are their own topic. A zipper foot, a walking foot and a narrow hemmer are the three most people add, and whether a generic set fits depends on your shank. Our sewing machine presser feet guide covers attachments in full, and the walking foot guide for Brother machines lists the ones that fit by model.

The rest, in the order people tend to want them:

What to skip

The "sewing kit for adults" listings sell more than anything else in this category, around 30,000 a month for the top one. They're hand-sewing repair kits, typically hand needles, mini spools, a tape measure and buttons. Good for a car or a dorm drawer. Nothing in them goes on a sewing machine. Big 100-piece "machine accessory sets" are the other trap; you pay for dozens of feet and tools you'll never identify. Buy the seven things above, then add as projects come up.

Gift bundles for a new machine owner

Every pick above fits any home machine except the bobbins, so they make a safe gift. Three bundles, smallest first:

  • Stocking-size: the seam ripper set, the tailor's chalk and a jar of clips.
  • The starter box: add the needles and the cleaning kit.
  • The full kit: add the seam guides, a light strip and bobbins, after you've checked which bobbin the machine takes.

Questions people ask

What accessories does a beginner need for a sewing machine?
Spare needles, extra bobbins of the right class, a seam ripper, and clips or pins. Those four cover the first month. Add a cleaning brush, a magnetic seam guide and a marking tool next, and buy presser feet only when a project calls for one.
Do generic accessories fit Brother and Singer machines?
Many do, but check two things. Bobbins must match the class your manual names: SA156 for most Brother home machines and Class 15 transparent for the Singer Heavy Duty line. Presser feet fit most home machines if they're low shank snap-on, which covers most Brother and Singer models.
Are the sewing kits for adults on Amazon worth buying?
Not as machine accessories. The best sellers are hand-sewing kits with needles, small thread spools, a tape measure and buttons, made for mending and travel. They're fine as a gift or a drawer kit, but they don't include machine needles, bobbins or anything that fits your machine.
Do I need to oil my sewing machine?
Only if the manual says so. Brother's help page says most of its home machines were made with enough oil and tells owners not to add any. Many vintage machines do need oil, at the points shown in their manuals.
How many bobbins should I have?
Ten to twenty is plenty to start: one per thread color you use often plus a few spares. Retailer guides suggest 20 to 30 once you sew regularly. A 50-pack costs little, and a bobbin box keeps them from unwinding in a drawer.
What is the most useful sewing machine accessory?
A fresh needle. A dull or wrong-size needle causes skipped stitches, broken thread and snags that look like machine problems. After that, a good seam ripper, which every sewer uses and Amazon buyers bought 8,000 of in one month.
