Sewing machine foot pedal replacement: find the one that fits your machine

A foot pedal fits by its plug and its controller model, not by brand. Here's how to read your machine's rating plate, which controller Singer and Brother list for their popular models, and the replacements whose listings name them.

Spec review · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

Look at the rating plate on your machine first, then buy a pedal whose listing names that exact model and has the same plug shape as your old one. Singer mechanical Heavy Duty models (4411, 4423, 4452 and relatives) take Singer's mechanical Heavy Duty foot control or a 359102-001-style pedal with a D-shaped plug. Brother's XM2701 manual names the KD-1902 controller, and the CS7000X manual names Model T. The table below sorts the popular machines, and every fit on this page comes from the maker or the listing itself.

How we picked

We started with the makers. Brother's operation manuals name the foot controller each machine family uses: the XM2701 manual lists Model KD-1902, and the CS7000X manual lists Model T. Singer publishes a fit list for its foot control for mechanical Heavy Duty machines. We didn't find a public Janome fit list.

Then we searched Amazon on October 15, 2026 for replacement pedals and kept the ones with real sales and hundreds or thousands of ratings, and read each one's compatibility list. A pedal only appears next to a machine below if its listing names that machine.

This is a spec review. We matched maker documents to listings; we didn't plug each pedal into each machine. How we research.

Find your pedal in three checks

Three checks before you order a replacement foot pedal A flow of three boxes. First, read the model and product code on the machine's rating plate. Second, match the plug shape at the machine end to your old pedal or the socket. Third, match the voltage to your country, 110 to 120 volts in the United States. Then buy a pedal whose listing names your model. 1 Rating plate model and product code 2 Plug shape machine end of your old cord 3 Voltage 110 to 120 V in the US then buy a pedal whose listing names your model
Brother's XM2701 manual says to read the product code on the machine's rating plate; the controller model depends on it.
  1. Read the rating plate. It's the label with the electrical ratings, usually on the back or bottom. Note the model and any product code. Brother's XM2701 manual lists its controller by product code (888-X06, 888-X08 and so on) rather than by model name, because one manual covers several machines.
  2. Match the plug. Look at the end that goes into the machine. Every replacement listing we read says the same thing: if your model isn't on the list, compare the plug shape and size with the photo before you order.
  3. Match the voltage. US machines run on 110 to 120 volts. Brother's XM2701 manual names different controllers for 110 to 120 V (KD-1902) and 220 to 240 V (KD-2902) areas. One Singer-fit listing we read gave 230 volts in its spec table while selling to US buyers; when a listing's numbers don't add up, ask the seller before you buy.

POANES Foot Pedal and Power Cord for Singer (D-shaped plug)

The listing says the cable has a full copper core and offers a 2-year replacement on damage. The ten spools of thread and ten bobbins in the box are a bonus, not a reason to buy.

Best for Brother XM2701, LX3817 and GX37

BRIGHTLYLIT Brother Pedal and Power Cord (J00360051)

Zasidler Brother Foot Pedal FC-322 (XC8816-021)

For the computerized and embroidery Brothers, the listings switch to the FC-322 style. This one lists the CS6000i, CS5055PRW, HC1850, SE400, SE1900 and both SQ quilting models, and sold 200+ last month. It has only 47 ratings, so a POANES FC-322-style pedal (189 ratings, a similar model list) is the other one to consider.

Neither listing names the CS7000X, whose manual calls for a Model T controller. CS7000X owners should ask Brother rather than guess.

Genuine or third-party?

A genuine part from the maker is the surest fit and the one the manual expects. Brother's XM2701 manual also says to use only the power cord included with the machine and to take a damaged cord to an authorized dealer. Singer sells its mechanical Heavy Duty pedal direct. Brother says its controller part code varies by country and points you to a dealer or service center.

Third-party pedals are what most people buy, because they ship fast and cost less than the genuine part. If you go that way, pick a listing that names your exact model, check the plug and voltage, and test it on scrap fabric at low speed first. If anything feels warm, smells hot or runs on its own, unplug it and return it.

A working pedal is the difference between a finished hem and a machine pushed to the back of the closet.

When the pedal stops working

Before you buy, rule out the easy things.

  • Push both plugs all the way in, at the machine and at the wall. Brother's machines have separate jacks for the foot controller plug and the power cord.
  • Turn the machine's power switch on. The light coming on tells you the machine has power.
  • On machines with a Start/Stop button, the button and the pedal don't work together. Brother's CS7000X manual says the button is disabled while the pedal is connected.
  • Clean lint off the pedal. Brother's manuals warn that lint and dust built up on the controller could cause a fire or shock.

Replace the pedal if the machine runs with no pressure or cuts in and out as you press. A cracked or kinked cord is the other sure sign. Don't open the pedal or splice the cord. If the machine doesn't run with a known-good pedal, the problem is inside the machine; for Singer Heavy Duty models, see our Singer Heavy Duty problems guide, and for a Brother showing a code on its screen, our Brother error codes list.

If the pedal makes the machine too fast

A pedal is a variable control: the XM2701 manual says light pressure runs the machine slowly and pressing harder speeds it up. If you can't feather it, look for a speed slider. Brother's CS7000X manual describes a sewing speed controller on some of the models it covers, and it caps the top speed even with the pedal pressed down. The Brother comparison chart lists each model's top speed. On a mechanical machine with no slider, a pedal that jumps from stop to full speed is worn, and a replacement fixes it.

A rubber pedal mat or holder stops the pedal from sliding away on hard floors. That's a convenience, not a repair, but a pedal that keeps escaping makes speed control harder than it needs to be.

The quickest way to the right pedal

Photograph your machine's rating plate and the end of the old pedal's plug before you shop. With those two pictures, most fits take a minute to confirm against a listing. If you're still deciding whether an older machine is worth the part, our is Singer a good sewing machine guide covers which models are worth keeping running.

Questions people ask

Are sewing machine foot pedals universal?
No. Pedals fit by the plug on the machine end and by the controller's electrical design, both of which vary by brand and by model family. A Singer mechanical Heavy Duty pedal doesn't fit a computerized Singer, according to Singer's own product page. Match the plug shape and the voltage, and buy one whose listing names your exact model.
How do I know which foot pedal my sewing machine needs?
Read the rating plate on the machine, usually on the back or underside, for the model and product code, then check the manual. Brother's XM2701 manual, for example, names the KD-1902 controller for product codes such as 888-X06, and the CS7000X manual names Model T for codes 888-N00 and related. Search for a pedal that names that model or controller number.
What foot pedal fits the Singer Heavy Duty 4423?
Singer sells its own foot control for mechanical Heavy Duty machines, and its product page lists the 4411, 4423, 4432, 4452, 44S and several 55xx models. Third-party pedals sold under Singer part number 359102-001 with a D-shaped plug also list the 4423. Singer says that pedal is not for its computerized machines.
Why is my sewing machine foot pedal not working?
Check that both plugs are pushed all the way into the machine and that the machine's power switch is on. On machines with a Start/Stop button, Brother's CS7000X manual says the button is disabled while the pedal is plugged in, so unplug the pedal to use the button. If the machine runs on its own, stops and starts, or the cord is damaged, stop using the pedal and replace it.
Can I use an extension cord with a sewing machine foot pedal?
Brother's XM2701 manual warns not to use extension cords or multi-plug adapters with many other appliances plugged into them, because of fire or shock risk. The pedal cord itself shouldn't be extended or spliced. If the cord won't reach, move the machine or the pedal instead.
Why does my sewing machine go too fast with the pedal?
A pedal is a variable control: light pressure is slow, harder is faster. Some computerized machines, including some of the Brother models in the CS7000X manual, have a speed slider that caps the top speed even with the pedal pressed down. On a mechanical machine, a worn pedal can jump straight to full speed, and replacing it is the fix.
