The best hand sewing needles, matched to the job in your hands

A needle that's right for mending is wrong for hand quilting, and neither one will get through a couch cushion. Here are eight packs that cover the jobs people actually do by hand, plus the size rule that confuses everyone.

Spec review · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

For general mending, buy a pack of sharps in sizes 5 to 10. For hand quilting, buy betweens. Everything else is a specialty needle you add when a job calls for it: long-eye embroidery needles, self-threading needles if threading is a struggle, and a heavy duty or curved set for upholstery. The eight packs below cover those jobs, and every pick is a real seller with its sizes on the label.

How we picked these needles

We searched Amazon for "hand sewing needles" plus the specialty terms (betweens, chenille, curved, self-threading) on October 21, 2026, and pulled "bought in the past month" and rating counts for each result. Sales put a pack on the shortlist. It stayed only if the listing named the needle type and sizes, because "assorted sewing needles" tells you nothing about what's inside. Lengths and pack contents come from the makers' listings: Clover, John James (Colonial Needle), Bohin, DMC and Singer.

This is a spec review. We compared listings and needle makers' descriptions; we didn't stitch with every pack. How we research.

Hand needle types at a glance

Every hand needle is a trade-off between length, eye shape and the point. Short needles make small, even stitches. Long eyes take thick or multiple strands. Blunt points slide between threads instead of piercing them. The diagram shows the common shapes side by side.

Common hand sewing needle shapes compared Seven needles drawn side by side: sharp (medium length, small round eye, sharp point), between (short, small round eye), milliner or straw (long, round eye), embroidery or crewel (medium, long eye), tapestry (thick, long eye, blunt point), chenille (thick, long eye, sharp point), curved upholstery (arched, sharp). Eye at the bottom, point at the top.
Only the length, the eye and the point change. Pick the needle by the job first, then the size by the fabric.

The size rule trips up nearly everyone: a higher number is a finer, shorter needle, the opposite of machine needles. Clover prints the measurements on its embroidery card, and they show it plainly: the #3 is 0.99 mm thick and 44.5 mm long, the #9 is 0.53 mm and 34.9 mm. Fine fabric and small stitches want the higher numbers. Heavy fabric and thick thread want the lower ones.

The 8 best hand sewing needle packs

Best everyday needle

Colonial Needle Sharps, sizes 5 to 10 (20 pack)

If you buy one pack of hand needles, make it sharps in a spread of sizes. They're medium length with a small round eye, and they're the right needle for hemming trousers, closing a stuffed-toy seam and sewing on shirt buttons. Sizes 5 through 10 run from sturdy to fine, so the same pack does a denim patch and a silk blouse hem.

Prefer a single fine size? Bohin Sharps size 9 come 20 to a pack, and Bohin says they suit light and medium fabrics.

Best for hand quilting

John James Quilting Betweens, sizes 3 to 9

Betweens are short, and that's the point. A short needle rocks through the quilt sandwich in small, even stitches, which is why every hand quilter owns them. This assorted pack lets you find your size before you commit to a single one, and John James nickel-plates each needle so it slides through the layers.

Most quilters drift finer as their stitches shrink. When you know you're a size 10 or 12, buy that size alone; Clover's No. 12 quilting needles are extra fine, with a round eye. Betweens are also a good needle for hand-finishing binding; our binding yardage guide covers how much binding to cut first.

Best long-eye needle

Clover Gold Eye Embroidery Needles, sizes 3 to 9

An embroidery needle is a sharp with a longer eye, so several strands of floss or a thicker thread go through without a fight. That long eye is also why people who find sharps fiddly to thread often switch to these for everyday mending. Clover lists every size's diameter and length on the card, from 0.99 x 44.5 mm at #3 down to 0.53 x 34.9 mm at #9.

With 7,158 ratings, it's the most-reviewed brand-name hand needle in our search. Clover's matching Gold Eye Milliners are the long, round-eyed version (the #9 is 42.9 mm), which is the length that suits basting and appliqué.

Best for low vision

SINGER Calyxeye Self-Threading Needles

No aiming at a tiny eye. You lay the thread across the slot at the top of the needle and pull it down into the eye, as Singer describes. For anyone with low vision or stiff fingers, that's the difference between finishing a repair and giving up on it. The pack comes in assorted sizes.

Singer doesn't list the individual sizes, only "assorted," so you'll find out what's inside when you open it. Clover's self-threading needles work the same way with a gold-plated eye. If you'd rather keep a normal eye, a large-eye pack such as the JNENERY 23-piece large-eye needles (7,746 ratings, 2.36 inches long) gives you a bigger target.

Best for upholstery and canvas

SINGER 01025 Heavy Duty Household Needles

Seven big needles for the jobs a sharp would bend on: a torn couch seam, a tent, a canvas bag, a leather strap. Singer names each one, so you're not guessing which is the leather needle. It's the best-reviewed heavy hand needle set in our search, with 6,684 ratings.

Use it with heavy thread, and a thimble or pliers for thick layers. For leatherwork beyond the occasional repair, see what a home machine can and can't do in our leather sewing machine guide.

Best curved needles

Veroave 9-Piece Curved and Upholstery Needles

A curved needle goes in and comes back up on the same side, which is the only way to stitch a cushion, a mattress edge or a stuffed animal you can't reach inside. Veroave packs three long curved needles and one short one with five straight heavy needles, at 3,000+ bought a month. Veroave describes the glover's needle as the one for leatherwork.

Best for sashiko

Lecien Sashiko Needles

Sashiko is a running stitch loaded several stitches at a time onto a long needle, so length is the spec that matters. Lecien's pack gives you six needles in four lengths, each with an eye big enough for sashiko thread. It sold 2,000+ last month.

If you want even longer needles for loading more stitches, Tulip Long Sashiko Needles come six to a tube.

Best kit and stocking stuffer

Coquimbo Sewing Kit (86 pieces)

It ranked #1 in Amazon's Sewing Tools category on October 21, at 30,000+ a month and 62,594 ratings, and it's sold as a Christmas stocking stuffer for good reason. Thirty needles, eighteen thread colors and the small tools a repair needs zip into one case. It's the kit for a college student, a car glovebox or a first apartment.

The listing doesn't say which needle types are in the 30, so don't buy it for quilting or embroidery. For a better gift for someone who already sews, see our gifts for sewers and quilters or the full Christmas gift guide.

Sharps vs betweens

Same point, same small round eye, different length. Sharps are medium length and do general sewing. Betweens are shorter, and the short shaft is what lets a quilter rock the needle through three layers and load several tiny stitches at once. Sew4Home's needle guide suggests sharps as the one type to buy if you buy only one, and that matches what we'd tell a beginner.

Where it gets blurry is binding and appliqué. Some people hand-finish binding with a between for control, others with a long milliner (straw) needle for reach. Try both; they cost a few dollars a pack.

What to look for in a pack

The label should name the type and the sizes. "Premium sewing needles, assorted" with a photo of 50 identical-looking needles is the pattern to skip; the cheapest large-eye multipacks sell in huge numbers, but many don't say whether a needle is a sharp, a darner or something else. Buy the brand packs for the types you use most, and treat the bulk packs as spares.

A few other things are worth a glance:

  • Eye finish. Clover gold-plates the eye on several of its lines. It's a finish, not a size change, so compare sizes, not colors.
  • Storage. A needle book or a magnetic tin keeps sizes apart; once a size 9 and a size 10 mix, you'll never sort them by eye. The SINGER 30-needle compact holds betweens, darners, embroidery needles and sharps in sizes 2 to 7 in slots, with a threader.
  • Thread. Match the needle to the thread, not just the fabric: if the thread frays as you pull it through, the eye is too small. Our thread guide covers weights.

If you only buy one pack

Buy sharps in sizes 5 to 10. They'll handle buttons and hems for years. Add John James betweens the day you start hand quilting, and a self-threading pack if threading has ever made you put a repair down. For the machine side of the drawer, our sewing machine needles guide picks the packs by fabric.

Needle types, sizes and counts, plus sales figures, come from the makers' Amazon listings, checked October 21, 2026. Type definitions agree with Sew4Home's "Selecting a Hand Sewing Needle" and Pound Fabrics' needle guide. Prices change often, so the buttons show the current price on Amazon. Questions people ask

What is the difference between sharps and betweens?
Length. Both are sharp-pointed with a small round eye, but betweens are shorter. The short needle rocks through quilt layers in small, even stitches, which is why betweens are sold as quilting needles. Sharps are medium length and are the general needle for mending, hemming and sewing on buttons.
What do hand sewing needle sizes mean?
The higher the number, the finer and shorter the needle. A size 10 sharp is slimmer than a size 5. Clover prints exact sizes on its embroidery card: the #3 is 0.99 mm thick and the #9 is 0.53 mm. Go finer for fine fabric and small stitches, thicker for heavy fabric and thick thread.
What needle is best for hand sewing with poor eyesight?
A self-threading needle, where you pull the thread down through a slot at the top instead of aiming it at the eye. The Singer Calyxeye pack and Clover's self-threading needles both work that way. A long-eye embroidery needle is the next easiest, because its eye is longer than a sharp's of the same size.
What needles do you use for hand quilting?
Betweens. Many hand quilters settle somewhere between size 8 and 12, and many start with an assorted pack such as John James sizes 3 to 9, then move to a finer size as their stitches get smaller. For big-stitch quilting with thick perle cotton, use a larger-eye needle such as a chenille or a big-stitch quilting needle.
What is a curved needle used for?
Sewing where you can't reach the back of the work: upholstery, cushions, lampshades, mattresses and stuffed toys. The curve lets the needle come back up on the same side it went in. The Veroave set includes one short and three long curved needles plus straight heavy needles for the same jobs.
What size needle do I use to sew on a button?
A medium sharp, around size 5 to 7, with all-purpose thread for shirt buttons. For coat buttons with heavy thread, go thicker, to a size 3 or a heavy duty household needle. A finer needle bends when you push it through a thick button shank several times.
