The best walking foot for a Singer sewing machine, matched to your model

Singer sorts its machines into fit groups and sells different even feed feet for them. We decoded Singer's groups into model numbers, flagged the machines that need a different foot, and picked the third-party feet worth buying.

Spec review · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

Find your model in the table below. For most current Singers, including every Heavy Duty from the 4411 to the 4552, the right foot is Singer's own Even Feed / Walking Presser Foot (SKU 250060096). The SE9180 and SE9150 combo machines need Singer's separate foot, SKU 250718096. Computerized Singers like the 9900 series and the Legacy SE300 get their even feed foot through Singer's quilting foot kit. Vintage slant-shank Singers need a slant-shank foot. The picks below cover each case.

How we picked

Fit came from Singer. Singer's store tags each accessory with machine group codes, and the same pages carry the code table that says which models are in each group. We read them on October 15, 2026 for the Even Feed / Walking Presser Foot, the Even Feed foot for sewing and embroidery machines and the Quilting Presser Foot Kit, then decoded the groups into model numbers.

Then we searched Amazon for walking feet sold for Singer machines and kept ones with real sales and hundreds of ratings. Third-party listings say "low shank" and "Singer" without model lists, so we tell you how to check them rather than promise a fit.

This is a spec review. We compared Singer's fit data with the product listings; we didn't fit each foot to each machine. How we research.

Low shank vs slant shank

Singer says its walking feet are designed for low-shank Singer machines. The shank is the bar the foot screws onto. On a low-shank machine, the distance from the bottom of the foot to the center of the screw hole is about 1/2 inch; our presser feet guide shows how to measure it. Most Singers sold in the last few decades are low shank. Many vintage Singers, such as the 301 and the 401, are slant shank, where the bar is angled toward you, and a low-shank foot won't fit them.

Low shank and slant shank presser bars compared Left: a vertical presser bar with the foot attached below, labeled low shank, about half an inch from the bottom of the foot to the screw. Right: a presser bar angled toward the sewer, labeled slant shank, used on many vintage Singer 301, 401, 500 and 600 series machines. Low shank about 1/2 in Slant shank angled bar

SINGER Even Feed / Walking Presser Foot

Singer's own foot, and the one Singer tags for the biggest set of machines: the whole Heavy Duty line, the Simple and Tradition mechanicals, and the computerized Brilliance and Confidence lines. The Amazon listing names the same five groups (CA, CB, EA, MA, MB), so it's the same fit list. It sold 800+ last month with a 4.7-star average.

Singer's page describes how it works: the foot has its own feed dogs that move with the needle and pull the top layer along at the same rate as the bottom. Singer also says you can use straight, zigzag or other stitches with it, but not stitches with many backward stitches.

SINGER Quilting Presser Foot Kit

If your Singer is a 9900-series, a computerized HD6600C to HD6800C, a Legacy SE300 or SE340, or a Futura CE model, this kit is how Singer covers you: its group list covers four groups the single Even Feed foot doesn't. You also get a 1/4 inch piecing foot and an open toe free motion foot, which are the other two feet a quilter needs.

For the Brilliance and Confidence groups (CA and CB), both this kit and the single foot fit. Pick the kit if you don't already own a 1/4 inch foot.

Best open toe for low-shank Singers

HONEYSEW Open Toe Walking Foot with Guide

The best-selling walking foot in our Singer search, 1,000+ bought last month. The open toe shows exactly where the needle goes in, which is the reason quilters pick it for stitch-in-the-ditch. The guide bar spaces parallel quilting lines without marking.

The listing says it fits low-shank Singer and Brother machines among others, but names no Singer models or stitch width. Fit it, set a straight stitch, and turn the handwheel by hand before you sew a zigzag.

YEQIN Even Feed Walking Foot, 7mm (214874013)

Most third-party walking feet don't say what stitch width they're made for. This one does (7mm, part 214874013), and it's upfront that it's a non-original replacement. A 5mm version (214875014) is sold for narrower machines.

Match the foot to your machine's maximum zigzag width, which is in your Singer manual. A foot narrower than the machine's swing can be hit by the needle on a wide zigzag; for straight-line quilting, width doesn't matter.

For vintage slant-shank Singers

DREAMSTITCH Slant Shank Even Feed Walking Foot (421333-451)

For the vintage Singers that low-shank feet won't fit. The listing names the 301, the 401 and 401A, the 500 and 503, the 600 Touch & Sew and a long run of 700- and 9000-series models, under Singer's old part number 421333.

One caution: the list also includes numbers such as 4552 that match a current low-shank Heavy Duty model. If your 4552 is a current Heavy Duty, buy Singer's Even Feed foot instead. Check the shank, not just the number.

The SE9180 and SE9150 exception

Singer's sewing and embroidery combos in the SE91 series are their own group (EG), and Singer sells a separate Even Feed foot for sewing and embroidery machines, SKU 250718096, tagged only for that group. The regular Even Feed foot isn't tagged for EG. On Amazon, one Singer-branded walking foot listing doesn't say which groups it fits or give a part number, so we can't confirm it's this foot. Singer sells 250718096 direct, and parts dealers list it for the SE9150 and SE9180. If you own an SE9180, order that part number and skip the generic feet.

How to fit a walking foot on a Singer Heavy Duty

Singer's instructions for its Even Feed foot, which apply to any Heavy Duty in the MB group:

  1. Turn the machine off and raise the needle and presser foot.
  2. Remove the presser foot, then loosen the screw and remove the presser foot ankle (the snap-on holder).
  3. Position the walking foot's arm over the needle clamp screw.
  4. Attach the foot to the presser bar with the screw and tighten it securely.
  5. Turn the handwheel toward you through a full stitch to check the needle clears the foot.

As the needle bar moves up and down, the arm drives the foot's own feed dogs, so the top layer moves with the bottom. A loose screw is the usual cause of the needle striking the foot. If your Heavy Duty is misbehaving in other ways, our Singer Heavy Duty problems guide goes through the fixes.

What to use it for, and what not

Straight-line quilting through all three layers is the main job. Singer's FAQ adds matching plaids and stripes and sewing velvet, vinyl and slippery knits. It isn't a free-motion foot: for stippling and meandering you lower the feed dogs and use a darning or free-motion foot, which is in Singer's quilting kit. Our free motion quilting for beginners guide covers that side.

Brother owners: the same logic applies with Brother's own part numbers, and our Brother walking foot guide has the fit table. If the machine itself is the limit for quilting, our quilting machine picks compare throat space and feed, and is Singer a good sewing machine covers which Singer lines are worth it.

Questions people ask

What walking foot fits a Singer sewing machine?
For most current Singers, the SINGER Even Feed / Walking Presser Foot (SKU 250060096). Singer tags it for its CA, CB, EA, MA and MB groups, which include the Heavy Duty 4411, 4423, 4432, 4452 and 44S, the Simple, Tradition and Promise lines, Brilliance, Curvy and the 7400-series Confidence machines. The SE9180 and SE9150 take a different Singer foot, SKU 250718096.
Does a walking foot fit the Singer Heavy Duty 4423?
Yes. Singer lists the Heavy Duty models, including the 4411, 4423, 4432, 4452, 4511, 4523, 4532, 4552 and 44S, in its MB group, and its Even Feed foot is tagged for MB. Third-party low-shank walking feet that name Singer will usually fit too, but check the needle clears with a hand turn before you sew.
How do I put a walking foot on a Singer Heavy Duty?
Singer's instructions: remove the presser foot and the presser foot ankle (the snap-on holder) by loosening the screw. Hook the walking foot's arm over the needle clamp screw, attach the foot to the presser bar with the screw and tighten it securely. Then turn the handwheel by hand to check the needle clears the foot.
Which walking foot fits the Singer SE9180?
Singer sells a separate even feed foot for the SE9180 and SE9150, its Even Feed / Walking Presser Foot for Sewing & Embroidery Machines, SKU 250718096. Singer tags it only for that group, and the regular Even Feed foot isn't tagged for it. Buy that one, or ask Singer before trying a generic foot.
Can you sew backward with a Singer walking foot?
Singer's instructions for its Even Feed foot say not to select stitches with many backward stitches. A short lock stitch at the start and end of a seam is common practice, but don't sew long runs in reverse. Tie off threads or use a few short stitches instead.
Do old Singers need a different walking foot?
Many do. Vintage Singers such as the 301, 401 and 500 series are slant shank and need a slant-shank walking foot, such as DREAMSTITCH's 421333-451, whose listing names those models. The 221 Featherweight is low shank. Measure the shank before you buy.
